How to Cook the Perfect Holiday Ham

There’s something special about cooking a delicious ham for the holidays. Ham not only makes a beautiful centrepiece, but it also brings families together. Here are our best cooking tips and glazing techniques for roasting a holiday ham to perfection!

How do I choose a holiday ham?

Our most popular ham is a cut that’s smoked with the bone-in. But, we can also cut ham to your specifications (size, boneless, unsmoked, etc.). A typical bone-in smoked ham runs between 4-11 lbs. Each person eats around 1/3 lbs of ham, which leaves plenty of meat for tasty leftovers! Our smoked hams are spiral-sliced, so they cook up juicy, tender, and flavourful.

Holiday Ham Prep

  • Choose our popular classic spiraled ham or our country roll brined option. Make sure to glaze either cut before cooking.

  • Classic hams taste divine when baked in the oven at 325-350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Country roll brined hams cook up best in a slow cooker on low heat for a slow roast.

  • A ham slathered in a savoury, shiny glaze always wins over guests. Our favourite glaze mixtures include fruit juice, wine or whiskey, honey, mustard, brown sugar, fruit preserves, and spices. Check out these popular ham glaze recipes for inspiration!

  • Before baking, brush the surface of the ham with glaze.

Oven Baking Your Holiday Ham

  • Keep ham moist and juicy by placing the ham cut-side down in a baking pan, and tent it with foil.

  • Line the bottom of a roasting pan with stock (or wine!) so ham won’t stick to the pan.

  • Partially cooked hams should bake for 20-25 minutes per pound. Uncooked hams should bake for 1.5-2 hours.

  • Every 20 minutes, brush the ham with glaze and baste with pan juices.

  • When finished, remove the foil tent. Brush the ham with glaze and juices once more.

  • Broil for about 3-5 minutes. This will create a mouth-watering caramelized glaze crust.

  • When ham reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s fully cooked!

  • Let ham rest for 15 minutes before carving. Here’s a great how-to carving video.

  • Slice enough ham for everyone, but don’t slice the entire ham. Leave the rest of the ham intact for leftovers, and meat will remain fresh and juicy for five days in the refrigerator.
