On Friday, May 3, the federal government announced the second wave of recipients receiving funding from the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, a $2-billion investment that seeks to help double the number of women-led businesses by 2025. The Calgary recipients were announced at an event held at District Ventures.
Our very own co-owner of Spragg’s Meat Shop, Bonnie Spragg, is proud to have been selected as one of the women-led businesses to receive $100,000 from the fund.
“For the past 14 years, I have put all of my energy and talents into this business. It feels great to be recognized for my hard work, and to receive financial support as we continue raising, processing, and selling local meat directly to Albertans,” says Bonnie.
"Our government believes that women's economic empowerment is not just the right thing to do; it's good for the bottom line. That's why we launched the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, a plan to double the number of women-owned businesses by 2025,” said the Honourable Mary Ng, Canada’s Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion. “Our investments in women-led businesses like Spragg’s Meat Shop will help us achieve this goal.”
The funding will be used to help upgrade Spragg’s Meat Shop’s packaging line. Two goals will be accomplished with this new equipment:
Increased automation and packaging speed
Improved packaging design
“We are passionate about feeding Alberta families like our own. This funding will allow us to continue to employ rural Albertans, as we expand our product volumes and customer base, providing the best local foods our province has to offer,” explains Bonnie.
As Alberta faces economic uncertainty, local food is putting down deep roots, and Bonnie Spragg is committed to leading the charge.
